IDC Staff Instructor

After months of hard work (congratulations are encouraged and welcomed) I have been certified by PADI as the newest IDC Staff Instructor. While it admittedly sounds less exciting than my prior rating of Master Scuba Diver Trainer, this new certification is one more step in the hierarchy, allowing me to independently train and certify other Assistant Instructors and assist Course Directors in performing Instructor Certifications.

Image via WikipediaOne of the most exciting aspects of earning the Staff Instructor rating was assisting with a real-life Instructor Development Course. I had the privilege of working with Lou Servizio, Course Director and four fantastic instructor candidates in their quest to become PADI Open Water Scuba Instructors.

Four PADI babies

Past weekend has seen us busy with certifying four newest PADI Junior Open Water divers…all four less than 15 years old.

What an amazing experience…seeing them take their first breath under water, eyes wide open and looking forward to the next step. Our open water dive number three was briefly interrupted by a five foot nurse shark, giving our curious youngsters a taste of the real ocean.

Congratulations Sam, Dylan, Elizabeth and Courtney…world is your oyster now!

Night Dive

It was an exciting night indeed.

I have to admit being blown away by the courage of my two most recent Open Water students, Fred and Vinny. They finished their certification on Monday morning and, without hesitation, have signed up for our night dive. Now, if you are into diving, you will understand that night dive is not exactly the easiest dive to do, especially if it is your first dive as a certified diver. Flashlights, pitch black water and lack of visible landmarks are certain to shake even a seasoned veteran.

But, Fred and Vinny had it going on. No fear. No hesitation. They took their giant stride and into the black. What an amazing dive it was. Stingrays, lobsters and even bat fish were all seen on the reef that night. Almost as if they were all there to welcome them into the brotherhood.

And of course Danielle and her boyfriend were there as well. This was Danielle’s fifth Adventure dive and her certifying dive as an Advanced Open Water diver. Congratulations!!! What a great diver she is. Confident, relaxed and ready for anything.

Rescue Graduation

Congratulations to our two newest Rescue Divers, Wolf and Patrick. They are both going on with their dive education and enrolling in our Dive Master program. We are certainly looking for more sessions like the last one — four foot seas, horizontal rain, 30 knot winds. A perfect day for some rescuing.

Of course, I was enjoying it immensely and working hard to make their life fairly miserable (not really, all in good fun). They both demonstrated mastery of skills and very able to quickly identify problems and act swiftly by using their knowledge and practical skills acquired during our confined water sessions.
